Unpaid carers across Essex are being offered free support with balancing their caring responsibilities and their search for work.

The new scheme, Essex Carers – The Way to Work, is being funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund.  Carers will be supported to tackle the day to day barriers they face creating a life away from home, while building their self-confidence and improving their health and wellbeing.

Carers over the age of 16, who are not in employment or full-time education, are eligible for the support including help with carers’ assessments, respite solutions, confidence building and vocational support. Carers who have been bereaved of the person they cared for within the last 18 months are also welcome to join the programme.

Key workers from Carers Choices and Action for Family Carers – two of the main Carers organisations in Essex - will work with unpaid Carers over several months to understand their difficulties and create an action plan of support.

Donall Hayden, 4SX Project Manager, said “Carers selflessly give so much of their time in helping their loved ones and this project is about supporting them with their roles and future outlook. Whether they are a young adult carer who left school with little or no qualifications or someone who gave up work to look after a relative, this project is there to support them.”
